I just picked this slab up from a very nice single mom in Sylvan Lake. She purchased several years back and was going to build a desk and use this as the top. This slab has a bow and cup on each side and has a 2.15 thickness on one end and the other end tappers down to 1.10 thickness. I normally would not purchase a slab with these characteristics, but I like a challenge.

The dimensions of this slab are:

  • 28 inch wide on one end with the 2 inch thickness

  • 23 inch wide in the center

  • 27 inch wide on the other end with the 1 inch thickness

  • The over all length is 64 inches

Here are the pictures she posted that caught my attention: (Dog was not included.)

I will be taken this slab to a fellow woodworkers shop that has a much larger shop and equipment than I do.

  • I will be using his planning sander to run this slab through.

  • I will use sticks under cupped side to level the board. I will pin nails these on with my23 gauge nail gun.

  • I will run it through several passes, until it is flat.

  • I will remove the runner sticks on the bottom side.

  • I will run the new flat side down several passes until this side is flat.

This slab will never be completely flat one side as it is tapered from one end to the other end. That is what I like about this.

I am considering make a table top with this and use a nice minimal metal legs underneath that is powder coated for showcasing this slab.

11/16/2021 update:

I chatted with my fellow woodworker and his planning sander will only accommodate 25 inches max.

So I will be building another shop item project. I will be making an adjustable router sled for flattening slabs of wood. I will post the build with materials used and plans for biliding your own under the Shared Projects section.

I will continue to post more about this project as I proceed.
